(AP) ? Jerry Sandusky opened his defense in his molestation trial Monday with character witnesses who defended his reputation, including a former Penn State coach who said he knew Sandusky took boys into showers but never saw him do anything wrong.

The six witnesses, one who called Sandusky a "local hero," did little to directly counter the testimony last week by eight young men who accused the former Penn State assistant football coach of sexually abusing them when they were children.

Judge John Cleland told jurors Sandusky's defense has about a day and a half left of testimony and that they could begin deliberations on the case as early as Thursday, a quicker schedule than had been expected.

Sandusky looked an Associated Press reporter in the eye and said nothing when asked if he planned to testify. Other possible defense witnesses to come include his wife, Dottie; and an expert who could discuss whether Sandusky has "histrionic personality disorder," which experts have called a personality disorder characterized by inappropriate sexual behavior and erratic emotions.

The list of potential witnesses also includes a physician who spoke with key prosecution witness Mike McQueary the night he said he saw Sandusky attack a child in a football team shower in 2001 and members of former football coach Joe Paterno's family, although it was unclear how they might fit into the defense case or whether they will be called.

Sandusky's arrest led the university trustees to fire Paterno as coach in November, saying his response to the 2001 report from McQueary showed a lack of leadership. Paterno died of cancer in January.

Dick Anderson, a longtime Penn State assistant and Sandusky friend who retired in January, testified that he and other members of the football staff were present when Sandusky brought young boys into the team's showers.

He said he never witnessed anything inappropriate.

"If Jerry would bring someone in with The Second Mile, they had been working out, for whatever reason they came in, it was not uncommon ... with the other coaches in the shower as well," Anderson said, referring to the charity for at-risk children Sandusky founded in 1977.

Anderson, who coached at Penn State from 1970 to 1983 and again from 1990 through the 2011 season, said adults and children often shower together at gyms. He noted, for example, that it's not unusual for him to be in the showers with boys at the YMCA.

Anderson also spoke in detail about the long hours of coaching and recruiting trips required of the job, which could lay the groundwork for a defense argument that accuser testimony about regular contact with Sandusky may be inaccurate or exaggerated.

Anderson said he did not know Sandusky had been barred by university administrators from taking children onto campus after the 2001 incident was reported by McQueary, although that was disclosed in court documents and has been widely and repeatedly reported since Sandusky's arrest.

When lead prosecutor Joe McGettigan asked him if that fact would surprise him, Anderson said yes.

Prosecutors claim Sandusky targeted his victims at The Second Mile, groomed them for abuse, then moved from touching and kissing to more severe forms of sexual abuse, including in some cases oral or anal sex. Sandusky has denied the allegations against him, acknowledging he showered with boys but saying he never molested them.

Earlier in the day, prosecutors told the judge they were dropping one of the 52 counts, that of felony unlawful contact with the accuser known as Victim 7. Prosecutor Frank Fina said the statute under which he was charged did not cover the time frame when the alleged act occurred.

The judge ruled against defense motions that charges were too vague or nonspecific to defend and that there isn't solid evidence of the ages of two accusers.

Prosecutors rested their case after calling their 21st witness, the mother of so-called Victim 9, a recent high school graduate who testified last week that Sandusky raped him in the basement of the coach's suburban home.

The woman said her son told her that Sandusky called him late one night after the first round of charges was filed in November, asking if he would be a character witness.

"He said that Jerry asked him to make an affidavit or some kind of statement on what kind of character or person he was," she said. "Why would he call my kid after he's being accused of things like this?"

In December, prosecutors brought more charges against Sandusky, alleging he'd had forced anal sex with the boy.

Victim 9's mother said the boy's laundry would often be short of underwear and he would claim he had thrown it away because he had an accident. Last week, the teen said Sandusky forced him to have anal sex that made him bleed.

In tearful testimony, the mother described gifts Sandusky gave her son, then added: "I wish he would just give him underwear to replace the underwear I could never find in my laundry."

The defense's case focused largely on Sandusky's reputation. Anderson said he was "well thought of in every regard," former Penn State assistant coach Booker Brooks called his reputation "exemplary, top-knotch," and local political consultant Brent Pasquinelli, who raised money for The Second Mile, called him "a local hero."

Besides Anderson, Brooks and Pasquinelli, three other witnesses testified for the defense Monday: a woman who ran a golf-related charity to which one accuser was recommended by Sandusky, a young man who knew Sandusky through The Second Mile and vouched for his reputation and a schoolteacher who said Sandusky seemed genuinely interested in helping one of the accusers in the case. None was on the stand for more than 10 minutes.

Tom Kline, a Philadelphia lawyer who represents one of the accusers, said he was served a defense subpoena on Monday, ordering him to produce a copy of the fee agreement he has made with Victim 5, along with copies of his interactions with reporters.

Braun hits 2 HRs, is beating his 2011 MVP pace

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Ryan Braun has watched his childhood buddy Trevor Plouffe climb up the leader board in home runs with a remarkable binge of late that included two long balls in Minnesota's series opener against Braun's Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night.

With Plouffe right in Braun's rearview mirror, the reigning NL MVP put on a show in Plouffe's spacious backyard on Saturday to let him know where he stands.

Braun hit two home runs and Michael Fiers pitched seven strong innings to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-2 over the Minnesota Twins.

"I can't let Trev surpass me in homers or I will never hear the end of it," Braun said with a smile. "It's my motivation to not allow Trevor Plouffe to pass me in home runs, which is not easy to do. Luckily we didn't throw him any strikes today. He only got to swing the bat once."

Braun added a double and a walk to back Fiers (2-2), the right-hander who gave up one run on four hits with five strikeouts. Aramis Ramirez and Cody Ransom also homered for the Brewers, who have taken the first two games in this interleague series.

Liam Hendriks (0-3) gave up five runs - two earned - on eight hits in five innings in his first start since being recalled from Triple-A Rochester. Plouffe went 0 for 1 with three walks, ending his streak of four straight games with a homer as the Twins lost their fourth straight.

"They weren't giving me much to hit today," said Plouffe, who leads the majors with 13 homers since May 16.

Ben Revere had two hits and an RBI for the Twins. Joe Mauer didn't start because of a sore hamstring, but grounded out in a pinch-hit appearance in the ninth to end the game.

Norichicka Aoki had two hits and two RBIs for the Brewers.

Braun is hitting .322 with 19 homers and 47 RBIs this season, even better numbers than at this point last year when he won the NL MVP award.

In eight interleague games this year, Braun is hitting .515 (17 for 33) with five home runs and 14 RBIs. The numbers are even more impressive considering Braun spent much of the offseason winning an appeal of a 50-game suspension for a positive drug test and he no longer has Prince Fielder hitting behind him for protection.

"I'm like a little kid in the dugout," Fiers said. "I want to watch every at-bat he has."

Braun and Plouffe have been friends for the better part of 15 years. Plouffe played baseball with Braun's younger brother growing up in California and got to know Braun, who is two years older, quite well. They share the same agent and work out together in the offseason.

"He's a special player," Plouffe said. "We've got to contain him. Can't let him beat us."

The Brewers were much more careful with Plouffe, who went deep 10 times in the previous 14 games, on Saturday. Fiers didn't give him much to hit in the first two at-bats, walking him twice before getting him to fly out to left in the seventh.

The Twins probably should've taken a similar approach with Braun.

Braun and Ramirez went back-to-back in the third inning, the second time this season the Brewers have gone deep two hitters in a row. Braun's solo shot was a rare opposite field homer for a right-handed hitter at Target Field, landing in the flower bed above the scoreboard in right-center.

"He's just got tremendous power," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "There's really no ballpark that can hold him in when he's hitting the ball well. When you see a guy going right-center, a right-hander in this ballpark, it's struck really well."

Braun got a little help in the fifth to get a crack at another one. He lifted a fly ball down the first base line and second baseman Jamey Carroll couldn't hold on to the ball after a very long run, getting charged with a tough error on the play.

Braun hit the next pitch into the bullpen in left-center field, giving the Brewers a 5-1 lead.

"I put too much of it out over the plate and he hit it a ton," Hendriks said.

NOTES: Ransom's HR was his first in 19 games with the Brewers since being claimed off waivers from Arizona. ... Brewers RHP Marco Estrada (right quad) was scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville on Saturday. ... Willingham was at DH rather than his usual spot in LF to rest an achy knee. ... Twins 1B Justin Morneau returned to the lineup after missing the game Friday night with a sore left forearm. He went 0 for 4, including a rally-killing double play in the eighth inning. ... The Twins will send RHP Nick Blackburn (3-4, 7.68) to the mound for the series finale on Sunday against Zack Greinke (7-2, 2.96). Greinke has allowed one run or fewer in six of his last seven starts.

Microsoft to take on iPad with British chips

The move therefore underscores Microsoft?s desire to break the iPad?s stranglehold on the tablet market, which is encroaching on its corporate IT stronghold. ARM architecture has come to dominate mobile computing because it is designed to consume as little power as possible, extending battery life.

?We obviously welcome Microsoft moving to ARM architecture,? said Mr East.

?Windows will be an exciting new market for us.?

Both the ARM and x86 versions of Windows 8 have been designed with Microsoft?s touchscreen-friendly ?Metro? user interface, adapted from its smartphone operating system Windows Mobile 7. It does away with the familiar start button and presents information from apps in constantly-updated ?tiles? on the home screen.

Some reports ahead of Monday?s announcement have suggested Microsoft will introduce an own-brand tablet before licensing the software to third parties manufacturers such as HP, in an echo of the way Google makes its own ?Nexus? Android smartphones.

Tim Anderson, a journalist and expert on Windows, said such a move would make sense.

?Microsoft wants to make a splash with Windows RT, the ARM version, and there is evidence that it is having difficulty communicating its benefits or convincing its [manufacturing] partners to get fully behind it,? he wrote.

He added that Windows 8 on x86 appeared to be too expensive and too hard to use to be an iPad-beater.

?Windows RT is critical to Microsoft and if it has to make its own hardware in order to market it properly, then it should do so,? Mr Anderson wrote.

Aidin Finds $600K From General Catalyst & More For A Yelp For Continuing Care

Aidin LogoAidin, a startup that helps people find better continuing care after they leave the hospital, is announcing today that it has raised $600K from General Catalyst, HLM, Red Swan and a band of angels and physicians from the healthcare space. The startup, a member of the NYC healthtech accelerator Blueprint Health, will use the funding to accelerate its growth and keep rampin' up that team. Everyone needs more developers these days. But what does this healthtech company do? Well, you shouldn't want to go there anyway, but hospitals need patients to find better care providers after they leave the hospital. Because they keep coming back. In the U.S., one in four Medicare patients are readmitted to the hospital within 30 days, and readmissions have a $17.4 billion price tag for hospitals.

India to Mandate Labeling GMO Ingredients in January

Artist in Doing Nothing/CC BY-SA 2.0

In the latest edition of the daily facepalm: Times of India reports that as of January 2013 food products containing genetically modified ingredients will have to be labeled in India.

Though, like elsewhere, the biotech industry protested, and won some concessions on the labeling scheme regarding package sizes and other factors (read the details at the link above), the thing that strikes me more than anything else is the huge question: If India can do it, why can't the US?

In case you needed reminding, of the world's wealthiest nations, including China, Brazil, and Russia (and now India), only the United States and Canada do not require labeling of GMO crops?even though, in the case of the US, surveys show the vast majority of people would like to know if they are eating genetically modified ingredients.

Check out the map below, from JustLabelIt.org:

(AP) ? The cost to dine with investor Warren Buffett has apparently spiked in value, with one deep-pocketed bidder forking over nearly $3.5 million during a charity auction.

The annual auction for a private lunch with the Nebraska billionaire closed following a flurry of activity in the final hours Friday night. In the end, the highest bid was a record-breaking $3,456,789.

The auction benefits the Glide Foundation, which helps the homeless in San Francisco. Buffett has raised more than $11.5 million for the group in 13 past auctions. The event provides a significant portion of Glide's roughly $17 million annual budget that pays for social services to the poor and homeless.

"We just had a most amazing, shocking experience occur in our great city," Glide's founder, the Rev. Cecil Williams, said in a statement Friday night. "We are shouting, dancing, rejoicing and celebrating."

The organization said Friday's winner bidder wished to remain anonymous. Williams said 10 people actively engaged in bidding.

Buffett became one of the world's richest men while building Berkshire Hathaway into a conglomerate. But he says most of the questions he gets at the lunches aren't about investing.

As in past auctions, the bids didn't reach astronomical levels until close to the end. Within the final hour of the auction's 9:30 p.m. CDT closing, bids jumped from $1 million to the final $3.46 million.

Buffett has supported the San Francisco organization ever since his late first wife, Susan, introduced him to Williams. Buffett says Williams is a key reason why Glide has been able to help so many people after the world had given up on them.

"He's changed thousands of lives that would not have been changed otherwise," Buffett said before the bidding closed.

The previous four winning bids have all exceeded $2 million with records set every year. Last year's winner, hedge fund manager Ted Weschler, paid $2,626,411.

In fact, Weschler paid nearly $5.3 million to win both the 2010 and 2011 auctions, and he wound up getting hired by Buffett last year to help manage Berkshire's investment portfolio. Buffett says he doesn't expect to find another new hire through the auction.

Buffett's business brilliance and remarkable record of investment success as Berkshire's chairman and chief executive is a big part of the draw for bidders, though he won't talk about potential investments.

And Buffett has also made a mark on the world of philanthropy, so past winners of the lunch have also wanted to discuss giving. Buffett has slowly given away his fortune since 2006, and he plans to eventually divide most of his shares of Berkshire stock between five charitable foundations. The largest chunk will go to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Buffett and Gates have also been encouraging other wealthy people to give away at least half of their fortunes. Nearly 80 of the nation's wealthiest families have signed the pledge.

The Glide auction's winners traditionally dine with Buffett at New York's Smith and Wollensky steak house. The restaurant donates at least $10,000 to Glide each year to host the auction lunch.

Past winners of the auction have said they believe the time with Buffett was well worth the price they paid in the auction. The lunches often continue for several hours as Buffett answers their questions.

Buffett says many of the questions he gets at the lunches are about nonbusiness subjects such as family and philanthropy.

Buffett's company owns roughly 80 subsidiaries including insurance, furniture, clothing, jewelry and candy companies, restaurants and natural gas and corporate jet firms, and has major investments in such companies as Coca-Cola Co. and Wells Fargo & Co.

Solar Panels on Your Roof: Energy Efficient and Practical

Roofing materials have developed and changed through the years, from the roofing innovations introduced by the Greeks and Romans who utilized slate roofing tiles, to a smorgasbord of roofing hardware today. Recent ingenious products like solar panels are now being used by installing them strategically on roofs to help homeowners save more energy. With rising costs, energy efficiency is a much-sought quality in home development. Gone are the days when just having a roof over your head, without thought to its energy-saving feature, was merely enough.

Recent innovations in roofing have opened new avenues for home owners who want energy-saving benefits and roof appeal at the same time. Though solar panel innovations are not yet widespread in many communities today, homeowners are becoming aware of the viability of solar roofing for its aesthetic and environmentally sensible values. Before you decide on solar panels for your roof, consider the following points, however beneficial they've proven to be.

Major adjustments to form and size on the roofing surface to accommodate solar panels have to be performed, as well as modifications to existing materials. Remember these changes cost money, but your commitment to the benefits on your home will pay off over the long term. You may need to have the shingles, underlayment, trusses, rafters, and flashings of your roof reinforced in order to carry the weight of the solar panels.

This technology is available in Lafayette, Louisiana, where several households and parishes have already attached solar panels to their roofs. If you are living in this fast-developing, energy-efficient community, you might consider this viable option the next time you are thinking of repairing or replacing your roof. Having solar panels attached to your roof is no task for an amateur. The complex challenge of roofing repair demands the skill of professionals. It is advisable to contact a Lafayette roofing company to help you in this task.

In Lafayette roof modifications go beyond conventional roofing standards. Not all roofing companies can help design or plan an energy-generating device for your roof. Research the various roofing companies in Lafayette that offers the services you need. You also need to check the credibility and legitimacy of these roofing companies to avoid complications of bad jobs later on.

Gather testimonials from previous customers and know what they think about the company's services and products. Before you spend money, be prepared to ask the questions: "is this the best service that I can get", or "are there better products that are within my reach?" Research matters because it will help you find the most capable Lafayette roofing company that can help you with your roof innovations.

White House veto threat on repeal of medical tax

WASHINGTON (AP) ? White House officials threatened a veto Wednesday of a Republican bill that would repeal a tax on the makers of many medical devices sold in the U.S., in the latest partisan clash over President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

GOP leaders plan to push the legislation through the House on Thursday in what amounts to a symbolic vote. The Senate's Democratic leaders have no plans to even consider the measure in that chamber, and it would have virtually no chance of passage there anyway.

The 2.3 percent tax, scheduled to take effect in January, is to be paid by the producers of medical equipment, though devices typically bought by consumers like bandages and hearing aids would be exempted. It was enacted as part of the 2010 health care law to help pay for that measure.

Backed by the medical device industry, Republicans say the tax would cost jobs in the $130 billion a year industry.

"The tax would be devastating on it," Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., told reporters.

The device industry is getting a potential 30 million additional customers who eventually will gain medical insurance due to the health care overhaul, the White House said in its letter warning of the veto.

"This excise tax is one of several designed so that industries that gain from the coverage expansion will help offset the cost of that expansion," the White House said.

Industry officials insist they won't gain extra customers, arguing that elderly people who use many of their products are already insured under Medicare.

The bill is being wrapped together with a pair of other health-related provisions. One would let people get up to $500 back from unused money in their tax-favored health flexible spending accounts. Currently, no money in such accounts is refundable if it's not spent for medical bills.

The other would let contributions to some tax-advantaged health savings accounts be used to buy over-the-counter drugs.

The device tax repeal would cost the government $29 billion of the $37 billion 10-year cost of the overall bill.

The measure would be more than paid for by language erasing current limits on the refunds individuals would have to repay the government if they get federal subsidies for health insurance that prove larger than they qualify for. That provision is expected to save $44 billion over the next decade, meaning the overall bill would reduce federal deficits by $7 billion.

Democrats say removing the limit on those refunds would in effect raise taxes on lower- and middle-income families entitled to the subsidies and result in many of them ending up losing coverage.

Group Sets World Record For Tablet Gaming: 26 Hours

While much of the focus at E3 this year was on the games being shown off inside the Los Angeles Convention Center, a group of gamers outside was focused on playing games to set a new world record.

32 gamers set out on a mission Tuesday to set the new world record for playing video games on tablets ? and 26 actually made it through the contest to win the honor, lasting 26 hours and 2 seconds.

Each contestant was given a Galaxy Tab 8.9 to compete with in the competition, and was assigned one game that they were required to play for the duration of the contest. Games were selected by the judges via random draw, so contestants had no control over what they played.

Options included GT Racing: Motor Academy, Virtual Tennis, Galaga: Special Edition, Fruit Ninja and Blood & Glory

After each hour of gameplay, contestants were allowed 10 minutes of rest time. Rest could also be accumulated, so if you played for two hours continuously then you could take a 20 minute break.

Anything requiring a human input had to be completed within 20 seconds of the option becoming available, so you couldn?t just sit on a load screen a snooze for a few minutes.

Tension was high in the gaming tent during the group?s final stretch on Wednesday afternoon, and event workers opened the doors to help let out some of the smell that had started to build up in the tent.

One contestant was surrounded by Gamer Food ? caffeinated peanuts -? in his chair, while another had a nest of empty Red Bull cans.

Of the 32 original contestants, six didn?t make it to the end. A few fell asleep, a few came back late from breaks and were disqualified, and one contestant decided to bow out.

Of the 26 that remained, five walked away with some cash and a Galaxy Tab 8.9 based on their performance playing the game Home Run Derby, with the man with the most home runs earning a cool $20,000.

Check out the gallery below for a look at the World Record competition in action. Do you think you could play the same tablet game for 26 hours straight? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Life Clerks ? Level Up Your Communication in Relationships With ...

Communication can be a really tough thing, especially if it is with someone that you have been in a relationship with for a long time. People tend to get comfortable with each other and when that happens the levels of communication may start to decrease because you ?know each other so well?.

I?ve been with my wife for 7 years (married for a little over 2 years) and we have had issues that every couple has had; assuming that each other knows something, miscommunication, lack of communication, and not taking time for communication. We fell into a comfortable routine in our life, and when that happened, our communication started to suffer.

SEE ALSO: 10 Things To Stop Doing in Your Relationships

So, don?t let comfortableness fool you; there is still communication issues that will come up if you don?t keep yourself open and honest and make an effort to communicate with your partner. Follow these simple tips to make sure that your communication in relationships is top notch.

1. Assuming

You have heard the old saying, ?Assuming makes an ?ass? out of ?u? and ?me??. Yes, it?s cheeky and kind of stupid, but it?s very true. It?s important in your relationship to not assume something unless it has been clearly laid out in some form of communication.

For instance, it?s assumed that I will take out the garbage every Tuesday night (oops, need to get on that), but only because my wife and I have a verbal contract that says so. If I don?t take out the garbage, then it is my fault. If there were no contract, the blame couldn?t really be passed to anyone. Sounds technical, but it happens all the time.

So, don?t assume, unless it has been laid out in a concrete way with your partner.

2. Say what you mean

If you have something to say in your relationship, then say it clearly and concisely. It?s important to tell the other person exactly what you mean, because if you don?t, they will create in their heads what they think you mean. And that is never a good situation to be in.

Just take some time to say what you mean, don?t rush your thoughts, and clarify your point if necessary.

3. Don?t shut up

If you have something to say, then say it. Don?t keep things bottled up inside, especially when something in the relationship is bothering you. Also, if you have something good to say about your partner, say it loud and often. People may not necessarily like to hear the truth all the time, but it?s an important communication skill to let the other person in the relationship know where you are at.

4. Think about her before yourself

?It?s all about me?. Yeah, that doesn?t work so well in a relationship.

While you shouldn?t let one side of the relationship have all the attention, it?s important to to let your other half have some attention before you get some. This shows that you actually care what they are doing in their lives and that you are interested in them.

Plus practicing a little selflessness every day can only make you a more sincere and empathetic person.

5. Don?t discourage conversation about feelings

Guys may be apprehensive about sharing what they feel at any given time (OK, anyone may be apprehensive), but if you really want to kick your communication into high gear share what your feelings are about the situtations that are going on in your life.

When I have shared what I truly felt with my wife, she was amazed and felt much more connected to me (and I with her). Talking about feelings sounds cliche, but don?t disregard it; it is important and it works.

6. Make communication time

At least once a day set aside some time to open the lines of communication with your partner. Basically shut down all the gizmos and just have a conversation. It may feel weird and somewhat uncomfortable at first, but the quality of the conversation will get better and better as time goes on.

Also, you will end up learning a bunch of things you never knew about your partner (yes, even after many years of being with them).

7. Make non-communication time

On the opposite side of this, make sure that you have scheduled time for not communicating. In other words, schedule a little ?me time? every single day. This is great for introspection and reflection on your life and current situation. You can process feelings, worries, thoughts, etc. by yourself and then bring them to your partner during your own communication times.

Sometimes we need a little quiet to understand what is going on with us on the inside.

Communication is the most important thing in my marriage and many others. Don?t take it for granted and make sure to spend some serious time working on communication by following the tips above. Your relationships will only benefit from them.

Devils avoid elimination, beat Kings on late goals

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The Los Angeles Kings only needed one last win to scratch a 45-year-old itch.

With a victory in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals, a long-struggling franchise would have matched the most dominant playoff run in NHL history. The largest crowd in their history could have watched the Kings raise the Cup for the very first time in an arena packed with past Kings heroes, Hollywood celebrities and faithful fans waiting since 1967 for this one cathartic moment.

Yep, the New Jersey Devils crashed quite a party Wednesday night.

Adam Henrique scored the tiebreaking goal with 4:29 to play, Martin Brodeur made 21 saves, and New Jersey beat the Kings 3-1 to avoid a sweep in the finals.

The Devils have never been swept in a best-of-seven series, managing at least one victory 43 times. They weren't going out that way at Staples Center, not even with every force in Los Angeles seemingly stacked against them.

The NHL unpacked the Stanley Cup deep inside the arena before the third period, but it never saw the ice.

"We're pretty happy to live another day, there's no doubt about that," Brodeur said. "We just wanted to play well, give everything we had, and see where that's going to bring us."

It's bringing them back to Newark for Game 5 on Saturday night.

After making a series of stunning saves in a performance that evoked his greatest moments, Brodeur said he believes in the Devils' comeback chances "more than yesterday."

"You know, I think we wanted to make them jump on a plane and come to New Jersey," said Brodeur, who stopped Simon Gagne and Trevor Lewis on his two biggest saves. "We had to go anyway. Might as well get a game over there."

Patrik Elias and Ilya Kovalchuk also scored third-period goals for the Eastern Conference champion Devils, who prevented Los Angeles from equaling Edmonton's 16-2 run through the 1988 postseason ? back in the days of a 21-team league, and with five future Hall of Famers on the Oilers' roster.

"We stayed alive," said Elias, who has two of the Devils' five goals in the series. "Marty had to work hard, but he gave us a chance. All we've got to do is keep playing hard."

The Devils felt they should have ended that run earlier in this series, but got no breaks in the first three games. They got a big break of their own creation in the third period of Game 4.

A few minutes after Drew Doughty tied it for the Kings, Henrique scored his third enormous goal of the postseason, taking a pass from David Clarkson and rocketing a wrist shot past Jonathan Quick, the Kings' nearly unbeatable goalie.

The Calder Trophy finalist ended two of the Devils' first three playoff series with overtime goals, and he kept New Jersey alive with his latest.

"It's fun. This is where every kid dreams of playing one day," Henrique said. "We know it's going to be a tough task to come back, (but) there's no quit in the group in here. We know we can do it. We know we can put four together and come back."

Quick stopped 21 shots for the Kings, but lost his streak of nearly 139 shutout minutes right when he probably could have wrapped up the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. The Kings had allowed just one third-period goal in their previous nine games.

Kovalchuk added an empty-netter that sent fans streaming forlornly out into a warm Southern California evening.

With a golden chance for a Hockeywood ending, Los Angeles dropped to 15-3 in its spectacular postseason run, failing to win the title on its first try ? and in its 200th playoff game, no less ? in front of the faithful fans who have never seen the Stanley Cup.

The Kings should head to New Jersey with confidence: They have won all 10 of their road playoff games this spring and 12 straight overall ? both NHL postseason records. But after never trailing in the Stanley Cup finals, the Kings never led in Game 4.

"I think (wrapping it up) was definitely on our minds, but they found a way to get a late goal," Kings captain Dustin Brown said. "We've just got to hit the reset button. We've been in this situation now four times in the playoffs, and we've always come back with a big rebound game."

Los Angeles set an NHL record by taking a 3-0 lead in all four of its playoff series, but failed three times to close out its opponents in Game 4. Vancouver and Phoenix also won Game 4 before losing Game 5.

The Devils became just the sixth of 26 teams in finals history to force a Game 5 after falling behind 0-3. Only the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs ever rallied with four straight wins in the finals, and only three teams in NHL history have done it in any playoff round.

"I think the last three games could have gone our way as easily as they've gone L.A.'s way," Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. "We finally got rewarded tonight."

After a tight-checking game between two very tight teams, Elias' rebound goal with 12:04 to play put a hush over Staples Center. But 62 seconds later ?and six seconds after Clarkson went off with a questionable boarding penalty ? Mike Richards passed Anze Kopitar's faceoff win to Doughty, who rocketed a long shot past Brodeur for the fourth goal of his breakthrough postseason.

But after so many minutes of tight defense, New Jersey won it with a stunning goal in transition: Former Kings forward Alexei Ponikarovsky got the puck to Clarkson, who found Henrique across the ice for his first goal since ending the Eastern Conference finals with an overtime goal.

"That's probably the best feeling I've ever had in my whole career," Clarkson said. "I saw (Henrique) coming, so I got it to him, and the shot was incredible."

The Kings opened their first Stanley Cup finals in 19 years with two tense overtime victories in New Jersey, surviving largely on the brilliance of Quick. Los Angeles then returned home and routed the Devils 4-0 in Game 3 on Monday night, setting the stage for a celebration.

But the Devils got into the details, and the Kings must regroup.

"We couldn't score," Kopitar said. "We had a couple of chances, and we didn't bear down. We didn't get a couple of bounces in, and you have to create your own bounces. They played with a little more desperation than we did, and we have to correct that in Game 5."

NOTES: The Devils changed their lineup for Game 4, inserting Petr Sykora into his sixth Stanley Cup finals along with D Henrik Tallinder, who had been out since January with a blood clot. Sykora, a healthy scratch since Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals, replaced Jacob Josefson, while Tallinder took the spot of former Kings D Peter Harrold. Sykora played more than 12 minutes, and Tallinder logged nearly 20. ... Gagne played his second straight game after returning to the lineup for Game 3. He had been out since Dec. 26 with a concussion. ... Will Ferrell, Will Arnett, Jeremy Renner, Vince Vaughn, Martin Short, Matthew Perry and Alyssa Milano attended the game. Wayne Gretzky and Teemu Selanne also were in the building. Selanne's Anaheim Ducks won the Cup exactly five years ago Wednesday ? and they're still the last team to raise the Cup on home ice.
