Talkin' Israel at the RNC

Condoleezza Rice

For a convention focused on the economy and taxes at a time when foreign policy is hardly considered an issue, any mention of Israel at the GOP gathering is worth noticing.

It may not amount to 15 minutes of fame, but a 95-second video in a tight convention schedule is also something. The video, titled Israel: Cherished Memories, summarizes Mitt Romney?s July visit to Jerusalem with highlights from his speech and the obligatory photo ops at the Western Wall and with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Israel also got brief shout outs in the foreign policy speeches Wednesday of John McCain and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

But behind the scenes, Israel is a major issue for all those involved in Jewish politics and Middle East advocacy. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee held receptions for Republican lawmakers and delegates and the Republican Jewish Coalition hosted a salute for pro-Israel elected officials. Taking the stage at the event, the Senators and members of Congress made the case for voting Republican, because of Israel.

?I don?t know how there are any Jewish Democrats,? said Missouri Republican Billy Long, ?With what Obama did to Bibi Netanayahu, I don?t know how there are any Jewish Democrats.?

Ted Cruz, who Republicans hope will be the next Senator from Texas, took on the Iran issue, telling the audience that if Iran ?is getting too close? to becoming nuclear, ?I?m sure Israel will act.? He added that in case on an Israeli attack, he?d be ?thankful? because Israel would be acting to protect American security as well.

A more nuanced approach was presented by South Carolina?s Lindsey Graham who sits on the Senate Armed Services committee. Graham told the Forward that a future Romney administration would ?give Iran a clear choice? and that he will ?give red lines to the Iranian regime.?

No one seemed to have the appetite for getting into details. Speakers on the convention podium, including Condoleezza Rice spoke in general about taking back America?s leading role in the world, instead of ?leading from behind,? but did not provide much substance. Advisers to the Romney campaign also avoided wading into the specifics of a future Republican administration?s policy regarding the Syrian civil war, Iran?s nuclear ambitions, or the moribund Israeli ? Palestinians peace process.

Can blue tits can save our conker trees?

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Blue tits, a familiar garden bird, could be the salvation of our imperiled conker trees (horse-chestnut trees), which are under severe attack by a tiny non-native moth that has spread from continental Europe.

Conker fans from across the country are being called upon to discover how many of the moth's caterpillars, hidden inside the leaves, are being discovered and preyed upon by birds.

The leaf-mining moth arrived in London just ten years ago, and has since spread across most of England and Wales. The moth caterpillars eat the leaves while hiding inside them, so damaging the leaves and causing them to turn brown and making the tree appear as if autumn has come early.

Experts at the NERC Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and the University of Hull are asking for the public's help to find out how many moth caterpillars are eaten by birds, such as blue tits. They are asking volunteers to check leaves from a horse chestnut tree for the distinctive damage caused by the birds to the leaf mines and report it through the Conker Tree Science website.

Dr Michael Pocock, from the NERC Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, said, "It's a big mission and we're reliant on people's help to discover how much birds are feeding on the alien moths."

"Excitingly, this mission was inspired by comments from some of the 8000 people who have taken part in previous Conker Tree Science missions. It's a great example of professional scientists and members of the public working together."

Dr Darren Evans from the University of Hull added, "The traditional game of conkers may be under threat, because trees infected with the alien moth produce smaller conkers. In discovering whether garden birds, like blue tits, can help to protect conker trees, we will also be learning more about the behaviour of the birds themselves."

The alien moth, which was discovered in the 1980s, has caterpillars that live inside the leaves, forming distinctive patches of damage called 'leaf mines'. Up to 700 leaf mines have been recorded on a single leaf and the damage caused by large numbers of larvae can be striking. A previous Conker Tree Science mission discovered that predatory wasps were not effectively controlling the alien moths, possibly explaining their rapid spread.

This project, where anyone can get involved with genuine scientific research, is one of the largest of its kind in the UK and is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

People can take part in the new 'Bird Attack' mission from 30th August 2012 to 23rd September 2012. More information: http://www.conkertreescience.org.uk/

Tropical Storm Kirk intensified into a hurricane today, Aug. 30, while another tropical depression was born. Satellite imagery revealed Hurricane Kirk and newborn Tropical Depression 12 romping through the central Atlantic Ocean today, while Tropical Storm Isaac continues to drench the U.S. Gulf coast and Mississippi Valley. Kirk became the Atlantic Ocean season's fifth hurricane today, Aug. 30.

On Aug. 30 at 7:45 a.m. EDT, a visible image from NOAA's GOES-13 satellite captured all three tropical cyclones in a panoramic shot of the Atlantic Ocean basin. The visible image showed Tropical Storm Isaac over the U.S. Gulf coast, Hurricane Kirk and Tropical Depression 12 in the central Atlantic Ocean. Isaac was by far the largest of the three systems, with cloud cover extending from east Texas to the Carolinas. Hurricane Kirk appeared as a small, rounded , compact storm, located northwest of newborn Tropical Depression 12, which appeared larger than Kirk. The image was created by the NASA GOES Project at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Hurricane Kirk

At 11 a.m. EDT on Aug. 30, Kirk became the fifth hurricane of the Atlantic Ocean season. Its maximum sustained winds were near 75 mph (120 kmh). It was far from land, however, about 1.065 miles (1.715) northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands near 27.2 North and 49.5 West. It was moving to the northwest at 12 mph (19 kmh) and had a minimum central pressure of 989 millibars. The GOES-13 image showed that Kirk was a compact hurricane, and hurricane-force winds only extend 10 miles (20 km) from the center, while tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 70 miles (110 km).

Tropical Depression 12 Expected to Become Tropical Storm Leslie

On Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. the warm summertime waters of the Atlantic Ocean gave birth to the twelfth tropical depression on the season. Tropical Depression 12 (TD12) had maximum sustained winds near 35 mph (55 km/h), and is expected to become a tropical storm later on Aug. 30 and could become a hurricane over the weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center.

TD12 was also far from land areas, located about 1,185 miles (1,905 km) east of the Windward Islands, near latitude 14.1 north and longitude 43.4 west. TD12 is moving quickly to the west near 20 mph (32 kmh). TD12's estimated minimum central pressure is 1007 millibars.

Satellite data shows a well-defined curved band of thunderstorms wrapping around the western side of the circulation center.TD12 is expected to move over warm waters which will help it strengthen, and it could become Tropical Storm Leslie later on Aug. 30, or Hurricane Leslie by the weekend of Sept. 2.

*Late Breaking Update: TD12 strengthened into Tropical Storm Leslie with maximum sustained winds are now up to 40 mph. At 2 p.m EDT- Leslie was located 1,125 miles (1,810 km) east of the Windward Islands, near 14.3N and 44.3 W. It was moving to the west at 20 mph (32 kmh).

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NFL will open the regular season with replacement officials.

Replacements will be on the field beginning next Wednesday night when the Cowboys visit the Giants to open the season, league executive Ray Anderson told the 32 teams. Negotiations are at a standstill between the NFL and the officials' union,

The NFL Referees Association was locked out in early June and talks on a new collective bargaining agreement went nowhere. Replacements have been used throughout the preseason, with mixed results.

In 2001, the NFL used replacements for the first week of the regular season before a contract was finalized.

Anderson, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, told the clubs in a memo that the replacements will work "as much of the regular season as necessary," adding that training with each crew will continue.

A request for comment from the NFLRA was not immediately answered.

Anderson said the sides remain apart on economic issues and other matters and called the gap considerable.

Prominent Sufi dies in Dagestan suicide bombing

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) ? Officials in Russia's violence-plagued Dagestan say a top Muslim religious leader and five of his followers have been killed by a suicide bomber.

A spokesman for the republic's police, Vyacheslav Gasanov, said the female bomber blew herself up at the home of Said Afandi in the village of Chirkei.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility or identification of the bomber.

Afandi was a leader of Sufi Muslims and had often publically criticized the Wahhabi sect that is the core of the insurgency in the republic. Clashes with militants and attacks on police occur almost daily in Dagestan.

Also Tuesday in Dagestan, a border guard opened fire on colleagues at a barracks, killing seven before being shot to death himself, Russian news agencies reported. There was no indication of motivation.

PFT: Steelers' Wallace ends his holdout

Arizona Cardinals v Tennessee TitansGetty Images

Now that Jake Locker is the starting quarterback, the job isn?t his to lose.? It?s his to keep.

Probably.

That was the key word during an interview of coach Mike Munchak by Steve Wyche on NFL Network earlier this morning.? Wyche asked if Locker would be benched for Matthew Hasselbeck for any reason other than an injury.

?Probably not,? Munchak said before eventually adding this caveat:? ?Unless there?s a reason to make a change.?

Careful inspection of Munchak?s words hint that the endorsement of Locker isn?t entirely unequivocal.

?I think we know Jake?s gonna have some ups and downs, as any quarterback does in the NFL,? Munchak said.? ?Being a young guy he?ll have some.? But he?s shown us when he?s had a bad day or bad throw he?s come back in that same game and made better decisions and made plays.? So I think in this situation we?re very confident in him.? We feel he?s won the position and he?s ready to go.? So, no, we definitely would hang with him unless there was like you said probably an injury situation.?

Again, ?probably.?

It?s no surprise, then, that the Titans have no plan to trade Hasselbeck.? And while they apparently don?t intend to have Locker on a short leash, Munchak?s multiple uses of the term ?probably? implies that a benching remains a possibility.

There?s nothing wrong with that.? Only franchise quarterbacks have guaranteed jobs from Week One through Week 17.? And if those franchise quarterbacks don?t perform like franchise quarterbacks, they could be in trouble, too, depending on the quality of the backup.

In Tennessee, Hasselbeck has shown he can get it done.? Locker has yet to show he?s a franchise quarterback.? And so, while the hope is that Locker will step up, the truth is that if he doesn?t, Hasselbeck will be ready to go.

For now, the Titans think that probably won?t happen.? Otherwise, they probably wouldn?t have given Locker the job.

Applying Examples of Sustainable Business Risk Management ...

image: risk management Traditional procurement strategies have primarily focused on cost, with most professional consulting firms targeting savings of 7% to 9% of revenue (including: vendor reduction, leverage spend, inventory reductions, transaction efficiencies, and administration savings through centralized functions).? However, growing business sustainability risks and opportunities within the supply chain have many companies reevaluating their purely cost savings driven decision making. ?Our sustainability consulting continues to follow the progress of industries heavily dependent on a healthy and sustainable supply chain.

In a recent Industry Week interview with a major supplier in the auto industry, IW reveals there is still residual turbulence following the economic downturn. ?These affects continue to affect the business sustainability at Dana Holding Corp. and with its Tier 1 suppliers.

"Our success as a company is dependent upon having a strong and viable supply base? The more we can plan, the better cost control we can have, and the better we can mitigate impact to our plants, and most importantly, mitigate impact to our customers? We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we certainly have a roadmap on how we're going to get there." - Gary Baugh, senior director of purchasing for Dana's Power Technologies Group

Our professional consulting has observed many leading companies are now realizing the unique value in elevating sustainable supply chain management as a strategic in-house competency.? We find companies are examining the value of company resources. ?Among the other fronts on which Dana is working to manage supplier risk, the company is:

  • Developing a master database that will detail "risk attributes" for each supplier.
  • Developing analytics and reporting capabilities to determine supplier risk beyond financial factors.
  • Working with its OEM customers and suppliers to establish dual validation of critical raw materials and components.

Growing business eco awareness and resulting business sustainability risk has provided companies with a new perspective to reassess their core functions.? At Taiga Company, our sustainability consulting provides information and business resources to clients of all sizes seeking to make incremental steps??towards a sustainable supply chain. ?We find insight from both the challenges facing each industry individually and the solutions that can be leveraged universally.

(AP) ? Nick Watney always felt the first playoff event for the FedEx Cup was the most important. A good performance in The Barclays could set up a player to reach the Tour Championship, have a mathematical chance at the $10 million bonus and qualify for all the majors next year.

This turned out even better.

Watney now has more than just 10 million reasons to be excited.

Not only did his three-shot victory in The Barclays on Sunday put him atop the FedEx Cup standings and assure that he'll have a good shot at golf's largest payoff, Watney suddenly is in the conversation to play in an event that doesn't pay anything at all ? the Ryder Cup.

U.S. captain Davis Love III makes his four wild-card selections after next week's Deutsche Bank Championship outside Boston. Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk are likely to be two of the picks. Based on what happened over four days at Bethpage Black, the other two now are up in the air.

"I don't want to be lobbying. It's his decision," Watney said. "The best way to enter the conversation is to play your way into the conversation."

That's just what he did.

Watney was two shots behind Sergio Garcia when the final round began. He was two shots behind through six holes after he three-putted for bogey from 40 feet. And just like the outlook on his year, it all changed so quickly.

Watney had a two-putt birdie on the par-5 seventh. On the par-3 eighth, with a dangerous pin at the front of the green with a shaved bank toward the water, he took a little off a 7-iron to play it safe and rolled in a bending, 30-foot birdie putt. Garcia tried to hammer an 8-iron, turned it too much into a bunker and had to scramble for bogey. That gave Watney the lead, and he stretched it to three shots on the 10th hole with a gorgeous approach into 4 feet as Garcia three-putted for bogey.

No one got closer than two shots the rest of the way. Watney hit 8-iron to 10 feet for birdie on the 14th, and he added a birdie on the 18th that didn't matter except for the score. He closed with a 2-under 69 and finished on 10-under 278.

"It's been not quite the year I wanted," Watney said. "But this really makes it all forgotten. Winning a tournament is hard, but winning out here and against this field was very, very difficult. I'm kind of still on a high right now."

Love isn't thinking about only Watney, however.

Brandt Snedeker, a winner at Torrey Pines and a contender at Royal Lytham & St. Annes, battled to the end and finished with two big putts for a 70 that put him alone in second place. Garcia, who bogeyed the last hole for a 75, tied for third with Dustin Johnson, who had a 68.

"Ryder Cup is definitely on my mind," Snedeker said. "But I'm not letting it affect the way I play. Try to win every golf tournament. It gives me more motivation to do it, and if I do that, I know I will make the decision easy for them.

"Davis has an extremely difficult choice with a bunch of guys who did not play well enough over the last two years to be on the team. You can't go wrong with any of them. I think that it's certainly helped everybody who played well this week."

The top three names on the leaderboard: Watney, Snedeker, Johnson. All of them are being considered as a Ryder Cup pick. Watney is the newcomer to the list based on his win at The Barclays, the strongest full field of the year except for the majors.

"I'm thinking much more now than I was coming in," he said. "Coming in here, I didn't deserve to be in the conversation because I had not played my way in. Someone told me that Davis said he wanted a hot player, and we still have a week to go. But like I said, I'd love to be on the team. But I'm not really concerned with it just because it's out of my control."

Tiger Woods, six shots behind at the start of the day, never made a move. He alternated between bogeys and birdies until the sixth hole, and his round imploded on the back nine with a three-putt double bogey on the 12th, a poor wedge that led to bogey on the par-5 13th, and a tee shot on the par-3 14th that sailed over the green and one-hopped against the gallery. He closed with a 76 and tied for 38th.

Garcia already wrapped up his spot in the Ryder Cup for Europe based on his win last week in North Carolina, his first on the PGA Tour in four years. He was going after his second straight win, but he showed signs of a struggle early. He missed back-to-back birdie chances from around 8 feet and missed greens from the fairway.

Watney, meanwhile, didn't miss a green until the 16th hole when he had a three-shot lead.

"I hit a couple bad shots at the wrong moments," Garcia said. "And unfortunately, I just wasn't feeling comfortable."

He had one issue with the New York fans on the 17th, a tough par 3 where club selection was difficult, and Garcia heard it from them when he took his time picking a club. That didn't bother him, and he was pleased about his two strong weeks that signal a good trend in his game.

And he enjoyed watching Watney, a pleasant Californian known as "Rube," after the character in "Major League 2" for being so respectful to his elders.

"At the end of the round on 18, I did obviously congratulate him and wish that he made the team," Garcia said.

None of this would have been possible if Watney had not changed his attitude, to quit getting down on himself when his score wasn't what he thought it should be. And his longtime friend Sam Reeves ? the same friend who introduced Watney to Butch Harmon ? arranged for Watney to meet with Darrell Kestner, the head pro at Deepdale, for a putting lesson. Watney was sitting back to far on his heels, and they worked on the setup.

"It paid off," Watney said, adding that he made more putts at Bethpage than he had all year.

While it was effectively a two-man race for much of the day, there was plenty at stake in the FedEx Cup.

Only the top 100 players advance to the Deutsche Bank for the second of four playoff events. The biggest move belonged to Graham DeLaet of Canada, who started the week at No. 106 and was right on the bubble going into the final round. After back-to-back bogeys early in the round, he rallied for a Sunday-best 65, including a 9-iron he holed for eagle on the 15th. DeLaet moved up to No. 44.

"I guess a lot of people think there's too much volatility in it, but it was in my favor," DeLaet said. "If you can have one really good event, you can catapult yourself up. And now I feel I have a chance to get into the Tour Championship, where this morning I was just hoping to play next week."

It was a good day for another Canadian ? David Hearn. Playing with Woods, he closed with a 71 and moved from No. 108 to No. 67. The other three from outside the top 100 who moved in were Jonas Blixt, Tommy Gainey and Jason Day, who closed with a 66.

Fire spreads at Venezuela refinery, 41 dead

PUNTO FIJO, Venezuela (AP) ? A fire at a Venezuelan refinery spread to a third fuel tank on Monday nearly three days after a powerful explosion that killed 41 people and ignited the blaze, Vice President Elias Jaua said.

Jaua said in a message on Twitter that a third tank had just ignited at the Amuay refinery. The refinery has been in flames since Saturday, and officials had previously said they hoped to blaze to keep diminishing until it could be extinguished.

Falcon state Gov. Stella Lugo told the Venezuelan radio station Union Radio that the death toll had risen to 48, but later said the correct number was 41 and that some victims' names had been mistakenly included twice on a list.

About 150 people were injured in the disaster, 33 of whom remain in hospitals, Prosecutor General Luisa Ortega said at a news conference at the refinery complex. "We still don't have facts to determine the causes of the accident," she said.

Criticisms of the government's response have emerged from local residents as well as oil experts. People in neighborhoods next to the refinery said they had no official warning before the explosion hit at about 1 a.m. on Saturday.

"What bothers us is that there was no sign of an alarm. I would have liked for an alarm to have gone off or something," said Luis Suarez, a bank employee in the neighborhood. "Many of us woke up thinking it was an earthquake."

The blast knocked down walls, shattered windows and left streets littered with rubble.

People who live next to the refinery said they smelled strong fumes coming from the refinery starting between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday, hours before the blast, but many said they weren't worried because they had smelled such odors before.

Then, a cloud of gas ignited in an area with fuel storage tanks and exploded. Some of the first tanks to catch fire still billowed smoke on Monday.

President Hugo Chavez visited the refinery on Sunday. In a televised conversation with the president, one state oil company official said workers had made their rounds after 9 p.m. and hadn't noticed anything unusual. The official said that at about midnight officials detected the gas leak and "went out to the street to block traffic."

"And later something happened that set (it) off," Chavez said. "A spark somewhere."

Energy analyst Jorge Pinon said the accounts of the hours leading up the explosion raise concerns.

"The fact that the gas leak went undetected for a number of hours and that there was no evacuation alarm (or) order indicates to me that there is a lack of safety related planning and behaviors throughout the complex, and most important in nearby communities," Pinon said.

"The key to refinery safety is not only equipment and maintenance but processes and behaviors," Pinon added, "not only within company employees but also contractors and surrounding communities."

Amuay is among the world's largest refineries and is part of the Paraguana Refining Center, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline.

The disaster occurred little more than a month before Venezuela's upcoming Oct. 7 presidential election. Opposition candidate Henrique Capriles said the disaster shouldn't be politicized but repeated past criticisms about the number of accidents at the state-owned oil company.

"Accidents occur for a reason, and we Venezuelans are expecting there to be a conclusive response, a serious, responsible and transparent investigation, in order to see what the situation was," Capriles said at a news conference.

Capriles has previously been critical of problems in the oil industry.

"Look at how many events have occurred, how many accidents, how many workers have lost their lives," Capriles said. He criticized state oil company president Rafael Ramirez for what he called "political maneuvering," saying what's needed is a serious investigation.

Van Persie heroics marred by Rooney injury

Robin van Persie marked his first Manchester United start with a sublime goal, but his side's 3-2 victory over Fulham was marred by a nasty injury to Wayne Rooney that will sideline the England striker for four weeks.

Van Persie had little chance to contribute during a brief substitute appearance in United's lacklustre defeat at Everton on Monday, but took just 10 minutes to make his mark at Old Trafford with a brilliant half-volley to cancel out Damien Duff's opener.

Inspired by the ?24 million ($37.9 million) Dutch striker, United went on to secure their first win of the season.

But the result was overshadowed by Rooney's injury late in the second half, which left the England striker, who was stretchered off, with blood streaming from a deep gash in his thigh after he was caught by Hugo Rodallega.

Rooney was taken to hospital for treatment and United coach Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It was a very bad one. He has gone to hospital. It looks like he will be out for four weeks."

Fulham had stunned United when Irish winger Duff fired home from just inside the penalty area in the third minute.

But that brought a scintillating response from van Persie, who levelled with a blistering strike from Patrice Evra's cross.

Like van Persie, former Borussia Dortmund star Shinji Kagawa was making his first appearance at Old Trafford and he marked the occasion by tapping in his maiden United goal.

United defender Rafael da Silva added a third goal in the 41st minute before Nemanja Vidic's 64th-minute own goal gave Fulham a glimmer of hope.

While United are off the mark, it is Chelsea who are setting the early pace as the European champions cemented their position on top of the table with a 2-0 win against Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.

Roberto Di Matteo's side, who have recorded three successive victories, went ahead in the 22nd minute when Eden Hazard drilled home his first Chelsea goal from the penalty spot after a Vurnon Anita foul on Fernando Torres.

Spain striker Torres added the second goal himself, lashing in from Hazard's back-heel just before half-time.

Praising Hazard's latest dominant display, Chelsea defender Ashley Cole said: "When I played for England against Belgium I had to mark him. I told the guys then that he's going to rip up the Premier League."

Everton, often hampered by slow starts to the season, also maintained their 100 percent record with a 3-1 win over 10-man Aston Villa.

South Africa midfielder Steven Pienaar gave David Moyes' side the perfect start as he struck in the third minute at Villa Park.

Marouane Fellaini increased the lead with a 31st-minute header and Croatia striker Nikica Jelavic swept home a Leighton Baines cross just before half-time.

Villa defender Ciaran Clark earned a straight red card for a professional foul on Jelavic in the second half and Karim El Ahmadi's 74th-minute goal was little consolation for the hosts.

Andre Villas-Boas was denied a first win as Tottenham manager as James Morrison's late goal secured a 1-1 draw for West Bromwich Albion at White Hart Lane.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto struck for Tottenham in the 74th minute with a deflected shot, but Steve Clarke's side levelled through Morrison in stoppage time.

"It is very important to get that first win but there are still 36 games ahead of us," Villas-Boas said. "We have one more point than we did this time last year."

Norwich City and QPR, both thrashed 5-0 last weekend, shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road.

Chris Hughton's side took the lead through Simeon Jackson's 11th-minute header, but QPR were level within nine minutes when Bobby Zamora converted the rebound after Djibril Cisse's penalty was saved by John Ruddy.

Wigan Athletic showed there is life after Victor Moses as the Latics won 2-0 at Southampton.

With Nigeria forward Moses having joined Chelsea on Friday, Wigan coach Roberto Martinez needed his other forwards to step up and Franco Di Santo rose to the challenge as the Argentine hammered a powerful shot into the roof of the net in the 51st minute.

Arouna Kone completed Wigan's victory with a fine solo effort in the 89th minute.

Sunderland's match against Reading was postponed less than 90 minutes before kick-off due to a waterlogged pitch at the Stadium of Light.

On Sunday, Arsenal travel to Stoke City and champions Manchester City take on Liverpool at Anfield.

Romney makes dig at Obama over birth certificate

COMMERCE, Michigan (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney took a dig at President Barack Obama on Friday over his birth certificate in comments that re-ignited a controversy over the Democrat's eligibility to be president.

"Nobody ever has to see my birth certificate," Romney told a rally of some 7,000 people in his home state of Michigan.

"They know this is the place where I was born and raised," he said to the laughter of the crowd.

Speaking alongside his wife, Ann, and running mate, Paul Ryan, Romney's comments were a reference to widely discredited theories that Obama, whose father was from Kenya, was not born in the United States and thus is not eligible to be president.

Conservative fringes of the Republican Party - including high-profile Romney backer Donald Trump - have argued that Obama was not born in Hawaii as he says.

Obama has released multiple copies of his birth certificate that show he was born an American citizen to try to end "birther" controversy.

Romney's camp tried to dampen the effect of his birth certificate remark, which was made at an outdoor rally at a farm near Detroit.

"The governor has always said, and has repeatedly said, he believes the president was born here in the United States," advisor Kevin Madden said. "He was only referencing that Michigan, where he is campaigning today, is the state where he himself was born and raised."

Romney, who has been pressed by Democrats to release his complete tax records, mentioned the birth certificate despite saying recently that the campaign had taken a nasty tone.

"Throughout this campaign, Governor Romney has embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them," Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said.

"Governor Romney's decision to directly enlist himself in the birther movement should give pause to any rational voter across America."

It was the second controversial comment by Romney in less than 24 hours, even as he tries to focus his campaign on Obama's job record.

Romney said in Minnesota on Thursday that "big business is doing fine in many places," seemingly contradicting his message that companies are struggling under Obama.

LL Cool J, the actor and rapper, recently stopped by Jackson's MMA, the gym that trains Jon Jones, Donald Cerrone, Clay Guida and many more UFC stars. According to a tweet from Jackson's MMA, he worked out there before a show in New Mexico. It turns out that workout came in handy when his Los Angeles-area home was broken into.

According to the Los Angeles Times, LL Cool J, whose full name is James Todd Smith, was upstairs when he heard a noise in the kitchen. He fought with the burglar, who suffered a broken jaw in the scuffle. Smith then controlled the burglar until police arrived.

There is no word as to whether Smith's mama told her son to knock the burglar out.

Military hits town near Damascus; 100 killed nationwide

ALEPPO, Syria | Fri Aug 24, 2012 1:26am IST

ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - Troops and tanks swept into a town near Damascus on Thursday in an assault aimed at crushing opposition to President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's increasingly bloody civil war.

Artillery and helicopters hammered the Sunni Muslim town of Daraya, killing 25 people and wounding 200 over the last 48 hours, opposition sources said. Soldiers moved in and raided houses.

"Artillery is firing from Qasioun Mountain in regular bursts of heavy barrages. I wonder what is left of the town," said one woman watching the shelling from Damascus.

At least 100 people, including 59 civilians, died in violence across the country, according to the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Some 200 were killed on Wednesday.

There was little resistance as Assad's forces pushed toward the centre of Daraya on the southwest edge of Damascus. Armed rebels had apparently already left.

"They are using mortar bombs to clear each sector. Then they enter it, while moving towards the centre," said Abu Zeid, an activist speaking by phone from near Daraya.

Assad's military had driven insurgents from most of the areas they seized in and around the capital after a bomb killed four top security officials on July 18. But rebels have crept back, regrouping without taking on the army in pitched battles.

Tanks and troops attacked the southwest Damascus suburb of Mouadamiya on Monday and Tuesday, killing 86 people, half of them in cold blood, according to Assad's opponents.

It is hard to verify such assertions due to state curbs on independent media. Syrian leaders say they are fighting "armed terrorists" backed by Western and Gulf Arab nations out to topple Assad for his resistance to Israel and the United States.

CHECHEN KILLED

Foreign fighters from Arab and other countries have joined Syrian rebels, possibly including Rustam Gelayev, son of a late Chechen rebel warlord in Russia's Caucasus region.

Russian media and websites sympathetic to Islamist insurgents in the Caucasus reported that Gelayev had been killed in Syria, with some saying he had been fighting against Assad.

Russia's Kommersant daily, however, cited a relative of Gelayev as saying he had been studying in Syria, had decided to leave due to the violence and was killed on his way to Turkey.

In Syria's largest city, Aleppo, tank shells crashed into buildings in the rebel-held Saif al-Dawla district, even as displaced civilians came back to check their houses or pick up abandoned belongings.

A man in a dirty T-shirt and tattered sandals, who gave his name as Mohammed, said his home was in the nearby neighbourhood of Salaheddine, now back in army hands after days of fighting.

"Me and my two brothers and our families left to stay with friends. I left with what I'm wearing. We are four families in one house," he said, as shells landed a few hundred metres (yards) away. "Does the world care about Syrians? I think not."

Aleppo, a once-prosperous commercial hub, is living through desperate times, divided by war, its streets stinking with rubbish and residents uncertain whether to flee or stay.

Rebel-held areas are at the mercy of army tanks, planes and helicopter gunships, with civilians now caught up in a conflict which Aleppo had mostly avoided until a rebel offensive in July.

"Where are we to go? Yesterday they hit the rebel base across the road, but nowhere is safe in Aleppo. The planes bomb everywhere," said a carpenter who feared to give his name.

"If there is a safe place in Syria, tell me. We don't have the money to leave the country," the 53-year-old added.

YouTube footage showed a funeral in Daraya of a mother and five children from the al-Sheikh family. Activists said the victims were killed by shellfire in the town after fleeing this week's military offensive on the Damascus suburb of Mouadamiya.

The bodies were wrapped in white shrouds, the children's faces exposed. Mourners laid green branches on the corpses and cried: "There is no god but Allah, Assad is the enemy of Allah."

BRAHIMI'S MISSION

International diplomacy has failed to brake the conflict in Syria, which the United Nations says has cost more than 18,000 lives since a popular uprising erupted in March 2011.

Outgoing U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan has blamed splits in the U.N. Security Council, where Russia and China have repeatedly blocked Western efforts to ramp up pressure on Assad, for the failure of his peace mission.

Babacar Gaye, the head of U.N. monitors sent to observe an abortive ceasefire declared by Annan on April 12, was expected to leave Damascus on Thursday. The mission's mandate has expired and was not renewed due to the spiralling violence.

Annan's successor, veteran Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi, was flying to New York for a week of consultations at the United Nations, his spokesman Ahmad Fawzi said.

It is not clear how Brahimi can succeed where Annan failed, given the deadlock among big powers and the intractable conflict in Syria, where Assad's minority Alawite-based ruling system is pitted against mostly Sunni opponents.

The upheaval in Syria, at the heart of a volatile Middle East, is already spilling over into its neighbours.

Sporadic clashes between Sunnis and Alawites erupted for a fourth day in Lebanon's northern city of Tripoli, breaching a truce agreed less than 24 hours earlier, after Sunni gunmen shot dead an Alawite man. Nine people were wounded in the fighting.

At least 13 people have been killed and more than 100 wounded in Sunni-Alawite fighting in Lebanon this week that has been fuelled by sectarian tensions in Syria.

Ankara has grown alarmed at apparent links between Kurdish militants fighting in southeast Turkey and the conflict in Syria. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has accused Assad of backing Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighters and says Turkey's military might act to counter any threat from the PKK in Syria.

Turkish and U.S. diplomats, intelligence and military officials held talks in Ankara on Thursday expected to touch on a possible buffer zone in Syria and steps to stop PKK militants in the border region from exploiting the chaos.

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian suggested Western nations and allies could consider setting up a limited no-fly zone over part of Syria without a U.N. Security Council mandate.

It was the first time Paris has talked of intervention by an "international coalition" rather than by the U.N.

"The scenario mentioned by (U.S. Secretary of State) Hillary Clinton of a particular zone where there could be a banned area is something that needs to be studied," Le Drian said.
